German Orbital Systems introduces a service for on orbit verification of space hardware and experiments – GROOVE. The innovative business model is based on German Orbital Systems 3U CubeSat platform, allowing quick and easy integration of customer hardware into satellite, giving the possibility to send hardware or experiments to space in an unprecedentedly easy, straightforward, fast and cost effective way.
Based on flight proven and reliable components, German Orbital Systems has designed a CubeSat bus with 10 identical payload slots with cost per slot comparable with the cost for ground testing of such kind of hardware – EUR 50 000.
GROOVE is designed for on orbit verification of components, scientific payloads, student projects and microgravity experiments. Later missions will allow pressurized slots, video feedback and more options for the customer’s hardware.
Each slot contains a PCB, which can be designed by the user in accordance with the specification which defines the mechanical Interfaces, the maximum mass as well as the power and data interfaces. Within the specification almost endless use cases for the customer are possible.
After reserving a slot on a scheduled mission through simple online form, the customer develops his payload in accordance with the GROOVE specification and delivers it to German Orbital Systems shortly before the launch. After a standardized compatibility check, the payload is integrated into a pre-produced GROOVE bus. The satellite is then launched within three months timeframe.
Once in orbit and successfully commissioned, our ground stations track the satellite and receive the data from the payload slots. The data packages are then forwarded directly and without preprocessing to the customer over the internet, ensuring customer’s data confidentiality.

German Orbital Systems was founded in 2014. The company has its roots in Technische Universität Berlin (TUB): first generation of German Orbital Systems products was based on technologies developed for implementation of such space missions as BEESAT (Berlin Experimental and Educational Satellite – small satellite project of the Technical University of Berlin), TUBiX20 (TU Berlin innovative next generation 20 kg nanosatellite platform) and LAPAN-TUBsat – the company adapted the inherited technologies to fulfill the needs of commercial customers. German Orbital Systems team also has TUB as a background. German Orbital Systems achieved solid market traction: multiple satellite subsystems and satellite kits delivered, several ground stations built and launch campaigns managed.
German Orbital Systems is a team of more than 10 professionals. Total company turnover since 2014 is more than 1.5 Mio Euro without having any venture backing.
